London mourns the loss of Jacob Rothschild, the distinguished financier and philanthropist from the renowned Rothschild banking dynasty, who passed away at the age of 87, his family announced on Monday.

Rothschild embarked on his illustrious career at NM Rothschild & Sons, the family bank, in 1963, before venturing into entrepreneurship and establishing various businesses and charitable ventures. Fondly remembered by his family, Rothschild was hailed for his multifaceted contributions.

“Our beloved father Jacob was a towering figure in countless lives, excelling as a financier, advocating for arts and culture, serving the public, championing charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, embracing environmentalism, and being a cherished friend, father, and grandfather,” expressed his family in a heartfelt tribute.

According to reports, a private funeral adhering to Jewish traditions will be held, with plans for a commemorative event to honor his life slated for a later date.

With an estimated fortune of approximately 825 million pounds ($1 billion), as per the previous year’s Sunday Times Rich List, the Rothschild family is renowned for its significant philanthropic endeavors, directing substantial sums towards Jewish causes, education, and the arts.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair joined a chorus of political and cultural leaders in eulogizing Rothschild, highlighting his pivotal role within Britain’s Jewish community and his efforts towards fostering peace in the Middle East.

Hailing from Berkshire, Rothschild received his education at Eton College before pursuing history at Christ Church College, Oxford University.

Following his tenure at NM Rothschild & Sons, he assumed leadership of Rothschild Investment Trust, now RIT Capital Partners, where he served as chairman until 2019. Additionally, Rothschild co-founded the J Rothschild Assurance Group, presently known as St James’s Place, in 1980, alongside Mark Weinberg, and held deputy chairmanship at what was then BSkyB Television.

In the realm of culture, he played pivotal roles as chairman of the board of trustees at London’s prestigious National Gallery and helmed the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Rothschild Foundation, responsible for managing the family’s ancestral home, Waddesdon Manor, announced that Rothschild’s daughter Hannah would succeed him as its chair.

Jacob Rothschild shared a lifelong partnership with Serena, his wife of over 50 years, who passed away in 2019. Their enduring legacy includes four children—Hannah, Beth, Emily, and Nat—and numerous grandchildren, perpetuating a heritage of excellence and benevolence.
