Staff at the lab were initially puzzled by Charlotte’s swelling abdomen, fearing it might be cancer. However, ultrasounds revealed internal “growths,” which turned out to be eggs. The mystery deepened as there were no male stingrays in the tank, leaving scientists baffled.

Two possible explanations emerged: the first is parthenogenesis, a rare process where eggs develop without fertilization, creating clones of the mother. The second theory is more intriguing – Charlotte may have mated with young sharks introduced to the tank, reminiscent of “Jurassic Park” scenarios.

Bite marks on Charlotte indicated potential mating behavior, suggesting a fascinating interspecies interaction. With up to four pups expected, DNA testing post-birth will unveil the true nature of the offspring.

Anticipation is high, with Charlotte’s due date estimated around Friday, Feb. 9. Updates will be shared on Team ECCO’s website and social media platforms.

The Hendersonville lab, the only ocean education center in the WNC mountains and Upstate South Carolina, provides vital marine education and houses the first inland aquarium in North Carolina. With over 11,000 visitors in 2023, the lab continues to inspire and educate about the wonders of the ocean.
